Finally a new Sanderson book!
It feels like it was months ago that I finished the second Mistborn trilogy – or years even! I think I started my Sanderson journey with Skyward? A book I got from one of my sisters for Christmas ages ago. She only knew that I wanted a book, and that “science fiction and fantasy” was something I enjoyed. She knew nothing of Sanderson and his bibliography – and neither did I, I’d barely even heard of him, and all I knew was that he was rapidly becoming one of the greats.
So I read Skyward, got hooked, started Mistborn, got hooked on that, and soon found myself biting over (not quite more than I could chew, but a fair bit)w hen I backed the four mystery-book-kickstarters (they were all great!). I read both the Mistborn trilogies, just finishing late last year and quickly decided to jump on to the next – The Way Of Kings – the best, most incredible thing he’s ever written (according to some of my mates, at least).
I’m going to be honest and say that it was a very heavy start. A slog, actually. So many names, so many things to learn, and keep track of. I think I restarted the book twice, just to make sure I was off to a good start and knew what was what from the get-go. But once I got it into it – and, perhaps a little bit deeper into it than usual, I was hooked.
No, actually, I was enthralled. I am enthralled. Like always with Sanderson, the story is huge, the world is enormous, the cast is rich and diverse, the plot is incredible… I honestly can’t find words to describe it. It’s like coming back to the most incredible fantasy world ever, to something you’ve been in love with all your life, but had almost forgotten about.
I can compare it to the Warcraft universe which I’ve been a fan of since I was about 8. It’s so huge now, 30 years later, (and it’s still growing) and it’s outgrown to dimensions I can no longer pay attention to or follow. I keep falling in and out of love with it over and over. The Way of Kings feels like that. It feels like I’m too late to a party that is so massive that I can never truly experience it all, even if I read everything, delve into all the theories, read up on all the conspiracies, follow all the forums… but love it. I can’t wait to become more and more entangled in it.
I don’t know if there’s any point in explaining the plot or giving a rundown of what the book is about. Just go read the official blurb, and know that it’s an incredible story. You’ll love it, I promise. Sanderson’s world building is of course still as incredible as in Tress Of The Emerald Sea, The Final Empire or The Sunlit Man. That the thing he does best probably, developing that world where everything just works, where it’s exciting and new, yet still familiar, logical and interesting. I have, of course, jumped right onto book 2 and I plan to read them all back to back.
I’ve already backed the next mystery book on Kickstarter, and I think that’s the only thing that’s going to make me jump between things – unless a different little palate cleanser shows up.
Can’t wait for the continuation. This is fantastic. I love being a Sanderson fan – I’m only disappointed in myself that it’s taken so long to become one.
