Book Review: Personal by Lee Child

This was in danger of being my least favorite Reacher book – if not worse – but it turns out it’s the best!

First things first – I love Lee Child and Jack Reacher, and I’m beyond hooked now. I picked up my first book a few years ago, liked it well enough, but really rekindled my love for both author and character after binging 3 seasons of the new TV show and getting a few second-hand Reacher books dropping into my lap recently. It’s gotten to the point where I’m trawling the local library for more (but they’re all loaned out at the moment!)

There’s just something about them. The action is deliciously violent and fast-paced, but also so clever and intelligent. I really love Reacher as an action hero, because he’s got this devil-may-care attitude, at the same time he’s a big, gentle giant – but he can also smash your face with a can opener in seven different ways. Probably.

The reason I almost didn’t love this book in particular, is because it’s first-person. The other Reacher books I’ve enjoyed so far have been third-person, and it really threw me off to begin with. I’d gotten so used to seeing Reacher from the outside, to following him around from a bird’s-eye view, that I didn’t really think I could enjoy being inside his head.

Oh, how wrong I was.

I LOVE being inside his head. Remember how I mentioned that Reacher books are both action-filled but also clever? Well, the cool thing about a first-person perspective is that it’s still just as violent, but it’s much more clever. Getting a front row seat to all of Reacher’s little plans, all his reasoning, his train of thought, every little detail he notices and adapts to and adjusts for is incredible.

Oh – and the book is great as well. The plot is reaaaaally good. I was worried that the ending was going to be really bad and foreseeable, but thankfully I was very, very wrong.

Are you a fan of Lee Child and Jack Reacher? Did you watch the show? Do you have another favorite action hero you’d recommend? Let me know in the comments!
