Book Review: Skeleton Key by Anthony Horowitz

This is so fun! Why donโ€™t I read more teenage books?

Iโ€™d all started at my local shopping mall โ€“ thereโ€™s a bookshelf there where people can leave behind books theyโ€™re finished with and browse for something new โ€“ and itโ€™s all free! (Obviously).

I walked past an afternoon and saw two titles that immediately stuck out โ€“ Point Blanc and Skeleton Key. I didnโ€™t recognize the author, Anthony Horowitz, but I knew Iโ€™d heard those titles before and looking them over quickly, I knew it was something Iโ€™d love to read.

So I started with Point Blanc, basically devoured it, and it was so fun! The whole series follow Alex Rider, British teenager and nephew of Ian Rider, spy and MI6 agent. As fate would have it, Alex is obviously recruited and becomes the worldโ€™s youngest (and probably best?) super-spy, at only 14 years old.

Again, these books are fun! Reading stuff like this, spy thrillers written for kid and teenagers really brought me back and reminded me of where my love of reading comes from. Itโ€™s easy reading, sure, the pacing is fast and the plot isnโ€™t overall complex, but you really donโ€™t want it to be. Not with these kinds of books. Itโ€™s fun, thereโ€™s action and thrills, more than a handful of intrigue and mystery, and often itโ€™s borderline dark.

Anyway โ€“ Skeleton Key is perhaps even better than Point Blanc was. I plowed through this one almost just as fast, and honestly, Iโ€™m contemplating getting my hands on more of these. I think these are book 2 and 3 in the series, and Iโ€™d definitely be interested in reading no. 1.

So yeah, Iโ€™m heading back to the mall today to have another look. Who knows, maybe Iโ€™m lucky and some teenager in town is making his way through the whole series and depositing them there for me to pick up?

Did you grow up reading Anthony Horowitz? If not, who was your favorite author growing up? I loved the Animorphs series myself, but I would definitely have read these had I known about this. Highly recommended for any book loving teenagers out there, and clearly, adults too!
