A-Tier Fantasy! Even if the third book never comes out these two books will live with me forever.
Patrick Rothfuss surprised me with The Name Of The Wind. I didn’t know what to expectโI’d heard great things of course, so I knew I was even in for a treat, but I also knew a lot of readers hate the fact that they’ve been waiting so long for the end of the trilogy. This George R. R. Martin-club membership is probably what kept me away for Rothfuss for so long.
But The Name Of The Wind was one of the best things I’ve read all my life and honestly, an impressive breath of fresh air, and I jumped at the second book as soon as I was done.
The Wise Man’s Fear took me a little longer to get throughโmy stupid real life kept getting in the way, but if anything, it only prolonged the pleasure.
Book two follows just about where we left off in book 1, the legendary Kvothe, hiding away as a simple innkeeper under the amazing cover name Kote is still telling the Chronicler his story, and what an incredible story it is. We go back to Kvothe’s younger days at the University, but it doesn’t take long before circumstances force him to leave, and for the first time we get to see how Kvothe ends up becoming the legendary person he is, beyond being an incredible student.

I wish I could ramble on about his many adventures, but I fear that would fall into the category of Major Spoilers Deluxe, so you’ll have to trust me when I say that every piece of Kvothe’s story is better than the last.
And Rothfuss’ writing is perhaps even better than in book 1. I always have a fear that a sequel will leave me longing for what was so great in the first installment, but not so with Rothfuss. His way with words, his incredible world building, the way he spins a tale and always connects even the tiniest of threads is nothing short of amazing.
Unfortunately, I am no desparately longing for book 3 like so many other fans, but I’ll try my best not to be as enraged. I can wait, Patrick. I can wait.
But I’ll leave you with this as a form of recommendation, and repeat what I said before: even if book 3 never sees the light of day, this is one of the greatest stories I’ve ever read. Highly, highly recommended.
