Whoa… what a huge disappointment.
I… I don’t know what happened. I devoured Red Dragon, loved it and and jumped right into A Silence Of The Lambs as soon I was done. After reading that I couldn’t wait to get started on Hannibal, which ended up being just as good as, if not better than the first two. I still hadn’t t got enough and was hoping that Hannibal Rising would be the incredible ending to a fantastic series, but… no.
Don’t get me wrong—Hannibal Rising delivers on the promise of being all about Hannibal Lecter, the one thing I kept wanting more of as I made my way through the first three books. I wanted to get deeper into the mind of the brilliant, cold-blooded killer, wanted to learn what made him tick and how he came to be who he is, and while the book does much of that it’s also… incredibly boring.
I suppose my issue with it is that theres too much back story. Hannibal Rising gives you everything you need to know about Hannibal from the very beginning, but I felt like there was never room for anything exciting. I was never thrilled, never motivated to read on. There was no mystery, nothing that intrigued me. It was just a slow crawl toward an end that honesty couldn’t come soon enough.
Maybe it because the first three books were so good, and this fourth one is very different. Maybe it’s my fault and I expected too much or got my hopes up about what this book would be like. It’s not that the writing is bad or that the story isn’t well-devloped. It’s just… boring.
All in all, it’s an alright ending to Hannibal’s story. It gives you a lot of what you long for in the first three books, and it’s a worthwhile final chapter. But on the way, it has lost some of the thrills and excitement. At least for me.
