Book Review: Point Blanc by Anthony Horowitz

This made me feel like a teenager again!

Even though I don’t recall ever having heard the name Anthony Horowitz before, I recognized the title Point Blanc when I walked past the free-secondhand-books shelf in my local shopping mall, so I figured… why not?

So I picked up this, as well as Skeleton Key by the same author and Point Blanc was randomly at the top of my pile when I headed off to the airport the other day. I went in blind, not knowing that this was a young adult thriller or part of a series following Alex Rider, London teenager-turned-MI6-agent, but I’m super glad I picked this upโ€”because this was fantastic!

This is the second book in the seriesโ€”not that it matters much what order you read them in from what I gatheredโ€”but Alex Rider has already been recruited by MI6 by this point and at the start of this book he’s recruited for his second spy mission: to infiltrate a school for rich, troublesome teenagers in the Alpsโ€”a place where something mysterious is going on.

I was hooked from the start. The writing is easy going and simple, but exciting enough that I was turning pages almost faster than I read them. I’d just finished a Lee Child Jack Reacher book before this, and honestly, Alex Rider is almost exactly the sameโ€”just with a little bit less violence and swearing.

Like I said at the start, this made me feel like a teenager againโ€”not because I’ve read this before, but this is definitely something I would have read if I’d come across it when I was younger. It’s gripping, exciting, thrilling and I honestly want to get on with Skeleton Key sooner rather than later. It’s a lot of fun to read young adult novels again, especially when they’re as good as this. I wish I could go into details about why this book is so good, but that would turn into spoilers very quickly. So unfortunately, you’ll just have to trust me on this one!

Are you a fan of Anthony Horowitz and Alex Rider? Did you read them growing up, or do you have a youth at home who loves them? If not I’d thoroughly recommend giving them a goโ€”maybe this is the book that gets them hooked on reading!
