Book Review: The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Whoa, where do I even start? Probably one of the best fantasy books… ever?

I’ve heard the name Patrick Rothfuss been thrown around for a while now. I have no idea how long exactly, not since I was very young, but definitely for years, and there was always two things that were mentioned in the same breath: his books were amazing, and everyone was waiting for the next one.

I think that both intrigued me and put me off reading them for so long. I didnt need another G.R.R. Martin in my life – I didnt want to read a great series only for it never to be finished, to string be along and never deliver on its promises.

Except suddenly I did.

One day I scrolled past an offer on Kindle. Recommended for me: Book 1 and 2 in the KingKiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. That’s all it took. It didn’t bother me that the series wasn’t done (and that people are afraid it will neverย be done) – it just made me that more interested.

And I’m so incredibly glad it did. Because this is bloody amazing writing.

The book follows Kote, an innkeeper who is hunted down by a chronicler. The chronicler knows his true identity, and wants nothing more than to write down the incredible story of Kvothe, the famous arcanist, magician and alleged king killer. And well… Kote, who is Kvothe in disguise, complies.

We go all the way back to the beginning, to when Kvothe was young, and we follow him through it all. My wife wanted me to describe this in one sentence, while I was reading it, and all I could say was it’s like Harry Potter, on speed, but high fantasy, and for adults.

Rothfuss’ writing is incredible. When it comes to fantasy writing I think Robert Redick has some of the most incredible world building, Brandon Sanderson write the coolest, most intricate plots, but Rothfuss has a way with words that is beyond anything I’ve ever read. Oh, and his world building, his magic systems and his characters are incredible too. No doubt.

I literally started book 2 the second I finished book 1. I just couldn’t wait, it’s that good – which doesn’t bode well for me seeing as book 3 might never see the light of day.

But honestly, this is so good that I’d rather read the first two books and never get the ending, than go without this in my life. Because this is some of the most incredible fantasy ever.

I always say this, probably: but this comes very highly recommended. It’s an easy read, compared to Redick and Sanderson, but its incredibly unqiue and definitely worth it. Give it a shot if you like fantasy. You wont be disappointed, I promise (not until you finish book 2, at least).
