Book Review: Hannibal by Thomas Harris

Hannibal keeps getting better and better! Not far from becoming one of my favorite villains!

I recently picked up Red Dragon, loved it and and jumped right into A Silence Of The Lambs as soon I was done. Both of those books were incredible – not that I doubted that, having been a fan of Hannibal (on screen at least) for as long as I can remember – but it was really fun to finally get into the brilliant mind of Hannibal Lecter on paper as well.

And that’s where this book really shines – because in Hannibal, Hannibal really is at the forefront of the plot.

Don’t get me wrong, the two first books were great, but Hannibal kind of takes a backseat to other investigations into other crimes done by other criminals. In this third book however, its all about Hannibal… aaaand, the people trying to get revenge on him.

It’s great to see that Hannibal finally gets more screen page time, because even in the first book, when he’s just advicing the FBI from his cell (which he also does in the second) Hannibal is who we want to learn more about.

Hannibal finally sees him out and about and this time around, he’s the one being hunted, by one of his former victims, crazed millionaire Mason Verger.

I loved the book, though I wish the ending was longer. I’ve seen the Gary Oldman film based on this book and I swear there was more drama toward the end, more plot, more substance. Hannibal is a bit longer than the first two books, but not by a lot, and though I don’t mind short books, the more invested I’m becoming in Hannibal, the more I wish they were longer. I want to read about him. I want to know more about what he does, what he thinks, how he became who he is.

I’ll probably have to wait until Hannibal Rising to get to that part though, and I can’t wait.

Have you read Hannibal or other books in the Hannibal series? Anything else by Thomas Harris that you’d recommend, or other authors with series that have amazed you recently? Let me know in the comments!
